Beatriz
Lopez-Flores joined the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley in 2003.
She is the director of the Graduate Advising Diversity Program, the
Julia Morgan Engineering Program and, in collaboration with the EECS
Department, coordinates the Summer Undergraduate Program in Engineering
Research at Berkeley (SUPERB). These programs offer tutoring, academic
advising, graduate fellowships, and other advising services to both
graduate and undergraduate engineering students.
Just before her arrival at UC Berkeley, Beatriz spent 18
months living in London and traveling throughout Europe, as well as
traveling to China and Australia. Prior to this, she served as
Vice-President for the national civil rights organization, MALDEF (the
Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund), for three years
where she was responsible for various national educational programs as
well as overseeing the Make Yourself Count/Hagase Contar!
Census 2000 National Education Media Campaign. Proud of being bilingual
and bicultural, Beatriz was a founding member of the fourth bilingual
radio station in the country in the early 1980's in the Salinas Valley.
Beatriz is a passionate advocate for equity,
underrepresented students and women's issues; she has a proven
commitment to forging links between students, faculty and
administrators. In addition to UCB she has worked at UCLA and UCSC.
Beatriz has served as a board member in various organizations such as
the Dolores Huerta Foundation, the AT&T National Consumer Issues
Council and the United States Secretary of Commerce Census 2000
Advisory Committee. Most recently she has had the opportunity to serve
as a reviewer for an NSF program.
A graduate with honors of UC Riverside, Beatriz holds a
master's degree in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from
Harvard University. She is a first-generation college student and a
proud product of Affirmative Action.
