The
mission of Cal Pre-Engineering Partnerships (PEP) is to provide
opportunities for middle and high school students to become eligible
for higher education in engineering and to be prepared to complete
baccalaureate degrees in mathematics-based fields including engineering
and computer science.
Cal
PEP accomplishes this by working closely with a
variety of partners to meet their respective needs. These partners
include students and their parents; 6-12 teachers, counselors, and
administrators; community colleges; public and independent colleges and
universities; regional non-profit organizations; corporations and
foundations; local and state legislators; and federal agencies.

Cal
PEP runs a
portfolio
of academic enrichment activities, including a PEP Summer
Academy on campus for six weeks from June to August for rising
6th
through 11th graders, PEP
Saturday Academies during the school year for eight weeks each semester
for 6th through 11th graders,
a tentative engineering faculty seminar series on campus for high
school
science teachers and students they invite, ADEPT Graduate Engineering
Fellows in area Middle and High School classrooms developing
Pre-Engineering Curriculum Modules, a proposed Summer
Pre-Engineering Camp (SPEC) for rising 11th graders from California
high schools, parent programs, teacher professional development
sessions, and student visits to UC Berkeley.
Cal
PEP targets its activities at students with educational and economic
limitations and schools with low eligibility rates for higher
education. Cal PEP has direct programs with schools in Berkeley,
Emeryville, and Oakland Unified School Districts. Cal PEP is funded by
the College of Engineering, the UC Berkeley campus, and generous
corporate and foundation donors including the Bechtel Foundation.
The Interactive
University
project uses internet and information technologies to engage the
surrounding communities with UC Berkeley faculty, staff and students.
