Quotes from URO Participants
"URO is a great experience, it really helps you to get to know yourself, know your work habits, know your strengths and weakness, and mostly importantly help you to determine your career choice."
--David Ding, URO student under Prof. Steven Brenner
--------
"I no longer consider this opportunity as 'work,' but as
a passion I pursue everyday out of interest and desire. The project
has surpassed any fathomable expectation I could have dreamt of
regarding undergraduate research."
--Mike Kurylo, URO student under Prof. Andrew Szeri
--------
"I encourage every engineering undergrad to apply for
URO or some other research position; it's the greatest strength
UC Berkeley provides to its undergrads."
--Marcio von Muhlen, URO student under Prof. Dan Fletcher
--------
"The URO program was the most important thing that happened
to me in college. Simply put, I learned a lot. Research is challenging,
and there are no textbooks for you to study. You have to learn how
to do a lot of problem-solving and how to work well in a team. Moreover,
my faculty mentor is one of the best, in my opinion. He really wants
us to learn, do good scientific research, and question exactly what
we know and don't know. This year, undoubtedly, changed my perception
of engineering and directed and focused a lot of my goals for the
future. I hope more students have the opportunity that I had."
--Laleh Jalilian, URO student under Prof. Dan Fletcher

FALL 2006 POSTER SESSION
Unlocking the Mysteries of Tomorrow Through the Research of Today
WINNERS
CONTENT - Ipsheeta Furtado (Engineering Physics)
- Project Title:
Implementation of Pulsed Laser Deposition at ARPES Beamline 7.0
Brief Description:
We have recently designed a pulsed-laser deposition chamber system for the ARPES branch of beamline 7.0 at the ALS for in-situ experiments.
ORAL PRESENTATION - Joanna Lee (Bioengineering)
- Project Title:
Kinking, Rather Than Corkscrewing, Generates Thrust in Spiroplasma Motility
Brief Description:
Details of thrust generation in Spiroplasma propulsion and its relationship to the cytoskeleton.
Mentor: Daniel A. Fletcher
VISUAL ORGANIZATION- Tracy Wang (Electrical Engineering & Computer Science)
- Project Title:
Tele-Immersions Project
Brief Description:
The tele-immersions project seeks to capture and transmit real-time 3D images and reconstruct them in an immersive environment. We employ multi-scale operators for this representation and stereo reconstruction. The process is optimized for real-time performance and accuracy.
Mentor:Ruzena Bajcy

Background
The College of Engineering's Undergraduate Research Opportunities
(URO) Program provides an opportunity for UC Berkeley's undergraduate
students in the College of Engineering, L&S CS, and Chemical
Engineering to participate in research with engineering faculty
members.
Funded by the College of Engineering, the program offers a limited
number of stipends. The stipend is $250 per semester of participation
and is intended for the enhancement of the undergraduate student's
future employment and educational opportunities. Stipend recipients
participate in a variety of research tasks under faculty supervision.
All regularly enrolled undergraduates in good academic standing
(minimum GPA of 2.000) are eligible to apply. Selection of recipients
is not based on financial need. Students are expected to fulfill
their research commitments, so they are advised to review their
schedules before applying for and/or accepting a position.
Procedures
Follow the How to get involved and find a
URO position link for information on how to apply. Detailed
research project descriptions are available at the 2006-2007
Projects link. The Forms
and Timeline of Action Items link provides a timeline of the
URO process.
Students are instructed to submit applications to the appropriate
departmental office. Applications are then forwarded to the appropriate
faculty mentor who will conduct the selection. Faculty mentors are
restricted to selecting only one student per semester.
Students must complete all work by the end of each semester. The
Dean's Office will transfer funds to departments, and departments
will process the stipend payments. Students are paid one $250 installment
per semester upon satisfactory completion of work and submission
of the final feedback report. |
