A Tradition of Innovation

Berkeley Engineering is a community that is dedicated to creating tomorrow's leaders and supporting today's pioneers. Students and researchers from around the world are drawn to Berkeley by its outstanding reputation, its internationally recognized faculty, and its strong tradition of impact in research and teaching.

Earlier Berkeley engineers brought water to California's great agricultural lands, pioneered the microelectronics that seeded Silicon Valley, and helped build the unbuildable in structures like Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate Bridge. Today, Berkeley engineers in every field remain at the center of technological innovation worldwide.

Our Mission

  • To educate men and women for careers of leadership and innovation in engineering and related fields
  • To expand the base of engineering knowledge through original research and by developing technology to serve the needs of society
  • To benefit the public through service to industry, government, and the engineering profession

Our Vision

Increasingly rapid advances in technology are creating unprecedented opportunities for innovation in every field of engineering. Today, opportunities to benefit society through engineering advancements are unparalleled in history. As a national leader in engineering education, Berkeley's College of Engineering is positioned to make major contributions in this era of opportunity.

College Leadership

Meet the leadership: Dean Richard Newton and the College's associate deans, department chairs, and organized research unit directors.

Engineering Advisory Board: A distinguished panel of alumni and friends who help shape the direction of the College.

Dean Richard Newton "I came to the College of Engineering from Melbourne, Australia in 1975 to complete my Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering and computer sciences. As you can see, I never left!

Nowhere else have I found the energy, the creativity, the people—the faculty, the staff and the students—and the opportunities and sense of purpose that Berkeley Engineering offers."
