About the College
Engineering has been an integral part of the University of California
since it was chartered on March 23, 1868.
The first of the nine UC
campuses to be established, Berkeley's six colleges included mechanics,
mining, and civil engineering. Mechanics and civil engineering merged
in 1931 to form the College of Engineering, into which mining was
incorporated in 1942.
The College now boasts seven academic departments
and an array of interdisciplinary programs housed in 10 buildings
on the northeast side of campus.

Student Employment
Sixty-one percent of undergraduates and 75 percent of graduate students work while attending Berkeley. The employed undergraduates work an average of 12 hours a week, while the employed graduate students average 20 hours a week.
Job Placement of Graduates
During the 2004-05 academic year, the campus's Career Center coordinated more
than 8,000 job interviews for graduating and continuing students with over 300
firms. Approximately 700 employers participated in career
fairs throughout the year,
including specialized events for EECS, CEE, and BioE majors co-sponsored by the
Career Center and engineering student organizations.
Alumni
Berkeley
Engineering’s 53,000 alumni live in all 50
states and nearly 100 countries around the world.
Currently, 62% are here in California. All Berkeley
engineering graduates are members of the Engineering
Alumni Society. Membership is free. Alumni serve
on College boards and participate in activities such
as high school outreach, student mentoring, the
annual Real World Engineering (where alumni meet
with current students to offer career advice), and the
annual engineering alumni awards dinner. Berkeley
engineering alumni stay in touch through our alumni
network engineering@cal. Go Bears!
Continuing Education
University Extension offers 2,700 courses each year to more than 55,000 students. Technical courses are offered through Continuing Education in Engineering, Bioscience, biotechnology and bioinformatics.
Additionally, the College of Engineering administers Cal VIEW (Video
Instruction for the Engineering World), which offers the latest on-campus courses
in specific areas of engineering. Classes
are available on videotape and many are offered for credit through the National
Technological University, a private consortium of 52 engineering schools offering
19 masters degrees through distance education technologies.

Resources
Libraries
Berkeley's library is ranked third among public and private institutions (after Harvard and Yale) according to the 2002 Association of Research Libraries. Berkeley campus libraries house more than:
- 9.3 million volumes
- 83,089 current serials
- 6.5 million microform items
- and provide access to more than 8,500 electronic journals via UC's California Digital Library.
Of these holdings, the Kresge Engineering Library holds more than:
- 226,000 volumes
- 1,769 printed serials
- 735,000 technical reports
- and more than 1,600 engineering-related electronic journals.
Affiliated Facilities
Among the major facilities associated with the Berkeley campus is the Richmond Field Station, a 150-acre site where more than a dozen research programs are in progress.
Also an important resource is Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a UC-managed lab that conducts unclassified research for the U.S. Department of Energy.
Research
Berkeley's College of Engineering (COE) stands at the leading-edge of cross-disciplinary research, from societal-scale systems to bioengineering and nanotechnology.
Our numerous research centers and programs conduct high-impact research, provide opportunities and financial support for graduate students, and enable faculty members to supplement one another's talents through interdisciplinary research in areas vital to the public interest.
