As the world becomes increasingly technical, it is important that all people have an equal opportunity to shape this trend. Today, there is a desperate shortage of people of African descent in America's graduate engineering and science programs, as well as on the faculties of those programs. Additionally, many minorities are being left behind in the ongoing technological revolution of the 21st century.
As graduate students in engineering and the sciences, the members of BGESS feel we are in a unique position to bring about progress in all of these areas. We have created resources on our web page as part of this effort. We invite you to explore and use the information contained herein. While you are here, we also invite you to visit our undergraduate counterpart, BESSA.
If you have any questions or comments about BGESS, the information within this website or the University of California, Berkeley please

Many thanks to all who participated in and assisted with the Science Fair this year. The quantity and quality of projects was yet again great. A special congratulations goes to the winning groups! For more information about the Science Fair, read on:
The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of California - Berkeley announces a new addition to the faculty, Dr. Keith Alexander will serve as the Executive Director of the Product Development Program (PDP). The PDP is a new graduate-level degree program whose central aim is to fill the unmet need at the national level for chemical engineering graduates who have knowledge and experience in the complex process of transforming technical innovations into commercially successful products.
BGESS Alumnus Kevin Kornegay (M.S. '90, Ph.D. '92 EECS) was recently featured in Forefront Magazine and as part of a "cool alumni" series in the Berkeley Engineering Lab Notes. Of particular note is Dr. Kornegay's recent award of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Janice Lumpkin Educator of the Year Award. Keep up the good work! Congrats to Hakim Weatherspoon and Mark McKelvin for each winning one of 43 national fellowships sponsored by Intel -- the 2005 Intel Foundation Ph.D. Fellowship, a premier fellowship of the EECS department and nationwide!
